The internet has become a necessity and dependency for all of us in both our home and business lives. If we stopped to look at the average internet activity we engage in a 24 hour period, we’d be amazed at just how many tasks, functions and activities we carry out that depend upon the internet.
Make it snappy!
The explosion in the volume of these activities is having a major impact on the internet service access at home and in the workplace, we demand speedy and snappy responses from the websites and services we are accessing. The user experience is ever more important as our tolerance for slow and unresponsive services is becoming lower and lower. Keeping up with the demands of our real-time online requirements is the challenge we have to address if our thirst and hunger for online is met with satisfaction.
The responsiveness of the internet has never been tested as much and by as many in today’s internet bandwidth intensive apps, video, news and commerce to name but a few. With statistics on the uptake of cloud services at an all time high, this has had the biggest impact on the performance of your access and impacting your experience of all things internet. Technology is keeping up with demands but you may need to question whether your Internet Service Provider is keeping pace. With so many of these services now being directly accessed and consumed via the internet is the service you procured delivering the current needs or is it time to review and refresh?
Ask the right questions
What do you know about the critical service you use to service your organisations unquenchable internet appetite? How do they connect you to core cloud and content application providers, are they a tier 1,2 or 3 provider? How is your web browsing optimised by your ISP, do they have distributed DNS and content caching? Have you experienced outage and poor performance? How resilient and scalable is the network you use? These are not typical questions you’re likely to pose, but maybe you should, as the answers to these questions will help you understand if your existing internet access is fit for purpose.
The user experience of your cloud applications and delivery of internet services need to be robust to deliver the experience enabling satisfaction and productivity alike. Challenge your service provider to deliver you a fit for purpose service.
